The Cultural Photographer and Skateboarders
Buenos Aires, Argentina is a city full of surprises. They may say everything in bigger in Texas, but one trip to Argentina might change your mind. Buenos Aires, where I was when the COVID virus outbreak became a worldwide phenomenon, has enormous sweeping cityscapes: broad avenues, some extremely wide like 9 de Julio the widest in the world, large parks nearly everywhere, an enormous 235ft obelisk, a massive theater (Teatro Colon), impressive public art installations, and no end of beautiful Belle Epoch buildings. In short, an eyeful for the cultural photographer.
Buenos Aires is like Paris or Bruges, it’s extremely photogenic in terms of city scapes, parks, architecture, and expressive faces like the ones on these skateboarders. I heard them from a block or two away as I was coming out of one of the many theaters on Avenida Corrientes. I got this shot of two of the skaters taking a break. One looks beyond me towards a cross street while his friend is smoking. They are anticipating the police or private watchmen who will break up their fun.
